According to the 2019-2020 Demographic and Health Survey, only 38% of adolescents aged 15-19 had ever received any SRH information from a healthcare provider. This is due to a number of factors, including: Cultural and religious beliefs and ack of access to services related to the fact that many rural areas in Rwanda do not have adequate SRH services available. This can make it difficult for adolescents to access the information and services they need. Gender based violence is also another major barrier to accessing SRH services. It is important to address the barriers that adolescents face in accessing SRH information and services. This can be done by: Providing accurate SRH information to adolescents through a variety of channels, including schools, community health centers, and religious institutions, Making SRH services more accessible, affordable, and confidential.

In this regard, Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians Rwanda has organized different conferences and workshop for religious leaders and youth in order to create awareness on the issues of Sexual Reproduction Health Rights and working to reduce the stigma associated with seeking SRH information and services.

Pastors’ conference

On 29th December 2023, 30 pastors were invited by the Circle Rwanda to attend the conference that held in Rwimiyaga sector, Nyagatare district in the Eastern Province. It is important to note that the choice of that Nyagatare is due to the fact that this District has higher number of teenage pregnancies in Rwanda. The first topic of the conference was Sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). It was realized that SRHR topic is not spoken by pastors because some pastors think that it is not spiritual matter. However, lack of information on SRH affect youth especially girls as some of them become pregnant at the early age.  Teen mothers face GBV from men who impregnated them, from their own families which use abusive languages and sometimes reject them, they are stigmatized by the communities and excommunicated by their churches and considered as the most sinful people.
